This is the journal of my endeavours to grow a range of fruit, veg and flowers from seed, grow organically, and my attempts to create a personal paradise with 1/2 acre of maintained gardens and 1/2 acre wild meadows. Northern Ireland's average daily high temperatures are 18 °C (64 °F) in July and 6 °C (43 °F) in January. Soil type: Clay

Beetroot 'Boltardy', Mr Fothergills. 
June 2013 sown; some didn't mature but went woody.

Cabbage January King. Seeds by Mr Digwell. Sown 23 June in plastic glass house. Planted outside mid Summer in fairly poor soil. 
2013 - caterpillars laid eggs; had to check regularly as not netted. End of Jan 2014 plants are looking good.

Calendula 'Orange King', (Hardy Annual), Carters Tested Seeds, 150 seeds, 50pence. Sown indoor sunroom 26 April 2013. Sown in plastic greenhouse 5 May 2013. Sown outside direct (veg box / warmed) 5 May 2013. June 2013 sown in pots for new veg bed. Another caterpillar attraction.

Carrot 'James Scarlet Intermediate', Mr Fothergill's, 2000 seeds, £1.45. 
Carrot 'Early Nantes 2' Thompson Morgan, 1,000 seeds. 
Sown outside direct (veg box / warmed) 5 May 2013. Slow to grow. Grown very close together as baby carrots; harvest Aug.

Chard 'Bright Lights'.  Sown in plastic greenhouse 17 April 2013; very quick to germinate. June 2013 2nd sowing for new veg bed. Did not get any 'bright' stems; not sure what happened.
Chard (Swiss) 'Bright Lights', Thompson & Morgan seeds. Sown in plastic greenhouse 13 April 2013. 
Chard 'White Silver 2', D.T. Brown seeds. Sown in plastic greenhouse 13 April 2013. Would have been happy if it wasn't for caterpillars (black) being extremely attracted to this chard and left me little to eat all Summer! However, the plant continued to grow over Winter.

Cineraria 'Maritima Silverdust' (Half Hardy Annual). Great plant!

Coriander (Hardy Annual), Carters Tested Seeds, 150 seeds, 79pence. 
Sown on windowsill 29 April 2013. June 2013 sown; good germination.
Coriander Cilantro, DT Brown. Sown in glasshouse 22 June 2013; bolted quickly after planted in the ground.

Courgette (yellow zucchini) 'Soleil F1', Mr Fothergill's, 10 seeds, £2.39. 
Sown in plastic greenhouse 13 April 2013; better results this year with less blossom rot.

Kale Dwarf Green Curled, Mr Fothergill's. Sown in plastic greenhouse 22 June 2013. Then planted out. (I prefer the taller varieties.)

Kohl Rabi 'Purple Vienna', Thompson & Morgan seeds. 
Sown in plastic greenhouse 13 April 2013; unsuccessful. June 2013 sown for new veg bed. (Look good in the veg bed.)

Lettuc Corn Salad Cavallo, Thompson and Morgan. Sown outside direct 4 Aug 2013; good germination; slow growing over winter but hardy; good plant. Happy with this!

Lettuce 'Radicchio Palla Rosa', Thompson and Morgan seeds. Sown outside direct (veg box / warmed) 5 May 2013. 1st time growing this plant and found it confusing in terms of how long it takes to mature and when to harvest.

Lettuce (Winter Varieties) - sown August 2013 direct into plot. Slow to grow at first but grew over Winter months and provided good crops as 'cut and come again'. Happy with this!

Onion Stuttgarter, De Ree, 100 pieces. April 2013 started them off in greenhouse in plastic trays; moved outside in May? and harvest early summer. Good results.

Pak Choi 'Colour and Crunch F1' Mr Fothergills, 175 seeds, £1.69. Sown 22 June 2013 in glasshouse; unsuccessful (think eaten by slugs/snails?).

Sown in plastic greenhouse 13 April 2013. Soil wasn't fertile enough; did not produce. Plants did not die down over winter.

Aubretia Springtime Mix. Sown indoor 8 April 2012 / 2 per module. 2013 update: plants continue to thrive and bulk out more in 2nd year.
Celery, Plant Hart's Seeds, US$2.29. Sown indoor 8 April 2012 / 4 per module x 8 indoor. Planted out in late June; very slow growth. 2013 update: left some of last year's plants to over Winter and will see if they grow Spring Summer 2013.
Fennel (Hardy Perennial), Mr Fothergill's, 250 seeds, £1.69. Sown indoor 8 April 2012 / 1 per module x 8. Plants grew very quickly/ very tall in 1st year. Growing strong again in 2nd year. 2013 - massive plants over 6 feet tall.
Nemophila 'Pennie Black' (Hardy Annual) Thompson Morgan Seeds. 2011 plants self seeded for an early Spring display in 2012. Flowers better following year as bigger impact. 2013 update: some self seeding from previous year.

  1. I have found that putting crushed eggshells in the soil when sowing seeds or in the hole when transplanting stops blossom end rot on plants like courgettes, tomatoes, peppers and squashes. It may not work for you but has to be worth a try.
